The Army announced Tuesday that it has selected Sig Sauer to manufacture and supply the 6.8 mm Next Generation Squad Weapon to replace the M4 carbine and the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, which the two fire 5.56 mm ammunition.

Next Generation Squad Weapon Program

During a news conference on Wednesday, two brigades of generals and a colonel answered questions about the selection, weapons, ammunition and the execution process.

The first batch of NGSW rifles and automatic rifles, along with their high-tech fire control goggles, are expected to arrive in the hands of an unspecified Army unit by the end of fiscal year 2023, that is before or in October 2023.

New Rifles, Bigger Ammo: In the Army's plan to phase out the M4 and 5.56, soldiers could see a new rifle and bigger ammunition over the next few years.

A $4.7 billion automatic rifle and handgun contract and a $2.7 billion contract for advanced optical computer-aided fire control equipment that works with both types of weapons, which are the biggest changes significant for individual or squad-level small arms in generations.

Do It All Sig Sauer Rifles

This weapon is designed and aimed at close combat forces. This includes infantrymen but also cavalry scouts, combat engineers, forward observers and combat medics, said Brig. General Larry Q. Burris, Jr. Director of the Multi-Functional Team-Soldier Lethality and Commander of the Infantry School

There are currently no plans to grant NGSW to melee soldiers. Burris said soldiers in fields other than those listed or not assigned to a direct combat unit will continue to use the M4 and M249 SAW options.

And if their command chooses, the special operations forces and combat arms of the Marines will also be included in the protection plan, the officials said.

The NGSW rifle is now known as the XM5. The NGSW automatic rifle is being called the XM250. The numbers for the two weapons are the order of what they will replace. The XM5 will replace the M4 carbine and the XM250 will replace the M249.

Once the weapon has gone through a series of follow-up steps, the Army will remove the "X" designation, said Col. Scott Madore, project manager for soldier lethality, officials said.

The Army opted for 6.8 mm ammunition after the release of the Small Arms Ammunition Configuration Study 2017. The research was driven in part by advances in enemy armor and field reports on performance poor and lackluster lethality of 5.56 mm ammunition at more than 300 meters in gunfights. in Afghanistan.

In Army research, officials said, the 6.8mm ammunition surpassed the 5.56mm in distance, accuracy and energy to cause lethal effects on the target. That measure applies to lethal effects on protected or unprotected targets.

When asked if the new ammunition would penetrate advanced armor currently in service, Burris declined to comment specifically on range or penetration. He said only that the round had "a lot of energy" in the target.

Initially, the 2017 report called for a medium caliber, something in the 6mm range. This makes it larger than the standard 5.56 mm ammo but smaller and lighter than the 7.62 mm ammo of the M240 medium machine gun.

According to military officials, while the 5.56 mm reaches its damage limit at a range of 300 meters or earlier, the 6.8 mm can effectively destroy targets at 600 meters or more.

For civilian shooters, the basic gauge of 6.8 mm is the same as the updated version of the familiar cartridge in the hunting world, the .270 caliber rifle cartridge.

That size difference is important, but in different ways. The XM5 rifle is two pounds heavier than the M4 when both are unloaded. But the XM250 is 4 pounds lighter than the M249 SAW.

This ammunition is heavier, but officials did not provide specific pounds and ounces for the full combat load compared to the 5.56 mm.

Over the next 10 years, the Army could order up to 107,000 rifles and 13,000 automatic rifles, Burris said.

The contract is capable of building up to 250,000 assault rifles and automatic rifles, according to previously published budget documents. Burris said the additional numbers are for Marines and special operations forces, if they use the weapons as standard rifles and light machine guns.

More than 1,000 soldiers provided real-world feedback during the 27-month weapons selection and testing process. Madore said more than 100 Marines and SOF also participated in the assessment and response.

But the first number of weapons released will be quite small as the Army increases production in two different locations, said Brig. General William M. Boruff, of the Office of General Executive Programs-Arms and Ammunition.

The Army Expects Its New Rifle To Be Of A Different Caliber

In the coming months, Sig Sauer will build 25 XM5 rifles and 15 XM250 automatic rifles and "a large amount of ammunition," Madore said.

Those initial items will help the Army and Sig Sauer adjust their manufacturing processes before upgrading operations to produce thousands of rifles each year. The contract is technically for an unspecified number of rifles. Burris says annual production numbers for the rifles will be determined by Army priorities and budgetary considerations.

He could not give an exact timeline of when all the 120,000 Army melee forces will receive the weapon systems.

The Army Has Its Next Generation Rifle, But Not Everyone Is Happy

Mr. Boruff said that Sig Sauer will receive millions of 6.8 mm rounds designed and manufactured by the government to begin the process of matching powder, primer and brass casings to make the 6.8 mm ammunition.

As the Epping, New Hampshire-based company builds ammunition production lines, the Army is funding work at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant near Independence, Missouri, the primary producer of most -ammunition.

The Lake City plant is adding a full line and building, which is expected to be completed in fiscal 2025, solely for the production of 6.8 mm ammunition.

The first important step for this rifle to be in the hands of the soldiers is the production of the ammunition. Boruff says the Army has limited interaction with companies since it designs its weapons and magazine solutions around government-made 6.8mm ammunition.

But with the option, the Army can now work closely as it speeds up production of the rings to build war and training stockpiles.

Burris said delivery times and weapons will coincide with the development of the ammunition base for this new batch.

When asked how the new ammunition can affect NATO allies and partner training, Burris said that some partners have shown interest in NGSW and the 6.8 mm program. However, the Army's use of this ammunition does not change the US Army's commitment to the continued production and use of NATO standard 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm ammunition for the weapons.
