After a week of work in Dubai it was time to fly back to Seattle. Similar to my trips overseas, Air Canada offers cheaper head-and-shoulders fares than the competition, including business class. So, I decided to treat myself to some return business. The time is Dubai-Frankfurt-Toronto-Seattle; This review will cover the first leg.
Inside Boeing 747-400
Maybe one of the reasons the tickets are cheap is because not all are business class. The first leg between Dubai and Frankfurt - flown by Lufthansa Air Canada - is on an economy flight. That's a shame, and nearly saved me until I saw what kind of plane it was: The Boeing 747-400 just got bigger. Sold out!

Entry to the US requires a negative COVID-19 test taken within three days for vaccinated individuals like myself (although the new rules will require all international travelers to develop a negative virus test within one day when departure begins on December 6). Fortunately, the exam is very easy to take in Dubai and not very expensive: a hotel room exam costs less than $45US. It came back negative the next day.
Lufthansa maintains a small dedicated site for pre-clearing travel documents, which can be done 12-72 hours before departure. I uploaded my test results and vaccination card the day before the flight and got the thumbs up within hours.
Online check-in was smooth and seamless, although the airport experience is a different story. Lufthansa and Swiss share a check-in area, and the queue was incredibly long when I arrived in the middle of the night for our departure at 0200. By the time I checked my bag, completed my personal document check, checked out of the UAE, and arrived at the gate, it had been an hour .
Boarding starts on time at the very small gate area for this type of aircraft. Economy class climbs in a row starting at the back, and I sit in seat 50A in the very back ($30 to reserve it up front).

Unpacked light blankets and pillows are provided on seats, and headphones are distributed by flight attendants. Luckily it was a 747 jumbo, I had no trouble finding a seat in the upper cabin even though the flight was full.
The cabin is arranged in the standard 747's 3-4-3 layout, and looks like it hasn't been updated in a long time. To be fair, Lufthansa halted production of the 747-400 early in the COVID-19 era, only to reinstate it a few weeks ago when demand soared and it became clear that Boeing's 777X orders weren't going to be filled any time soon. quick.
The seat is the most commonly seen international standard of 31", while the narrow width is 17.5". The window seat gains more space thanks to the sloped side walls, adding perhaps another two or three inches. Each line has two universal power ports, though neither worked on mine.
Being an early morning departure, I attempted to descend into dreamland shortly after takeoff. The adjustable winged headrest is helpful for resting during flight.

Annoyingly, a sleepy old man interrupts the first of two service meals, with the side-wall room light on. Staff handed out sandwiches and soft drinks. I wasn't that hungry so I turned it down, but it looked like some sort of meat sandwich wrapped in plastic. It took over an hour before the lights happily went out.
Between the two services and sleep, I watched a movie about in-flight entertainment systems. The ~8-inch touch screen is pretty sharp and clear though perhaps not new. It has a headphone jack and a USB port, both of which work without issue.
Overall the content is good but nowhere near as big a supply as Emirates. Movie selection in the under 200's, TV selection in the 50's. I didn't play hard, instead I focused on relaxing as much as I could.
In-flight Panasonic Avionics Wi-Fi is also available. Prices start at just $8 to chat and go up to $34 for email and surfing. People who want to burn Lufty miles can also purchase internet access using the miles. Technically it's like a data plan; Speed-enhanced data usage limits.
