The post, home to the 1st Armored Division "Old Ironsides", is home to approximately 8,500 people. Named after Lt. Col. William Bliss, an army officer and son-in-law of President Zachary Taylor (1849-150), the post was first established in 1849 as an outpost at El Paso del Norte and then formally established as permanent. Fortress in 1878.
Fort Bliss covers approximately 1,700 square miles of the 1.12 million acres dedicated to training, making it the second largest US Army installation in the world.

A military ID is required to enter the checkpoint, and all adult passengers must present a valid ID (driver's license, passport, etc.). If you do not have a military ID, you will need a driver's license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance. Your vehicle is most likely to be searched if you enter the post office for the first time or without a military ID. Therefore, you can include extra time in your travel plans to account for such a delay. All non-DoD personnel can expect to receive a visitor pass through specific gates with Visitor Control Centers (VCCs).
As you enter through the Fred Wilson Gate, after passing through the access control point, turn right onto Sheridan Rd, then turn left onto Lawrence St and right onto Pershing Rd. Follow Pershing Road until you see the Welcome Center on the left.
If you go through the Buffalo Soldier Gate, after passing through the access control point, follow Buffalo Soldier Road until you reach JEB Stuart Road and turn right. Then turn left onto Pershing Road and continue until you see the Welcome Center on your right.
When you arrive at the post office, you will go to the reception barracks (building 1006 Carter Road) for processing. This building is open 24 hours a day. Check-in must be done at your ACUs. This seat is for both officers and enlisted personnel.

It has a population of about 840,000, making it the 22nd largest city in the United States and the county seat of El Paso County. The desert city is located along the Rio Grande in the Mexican border, directly opposite Ciudad Juarez and is the intersection of Texas, New Mexico and along the border of the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Downtown El Paso offers museums, craft breweries, a zoo, local sporting events, as well as the Sun Bowl Stadium, a water park and is surrounded by mountain national parks within a short drive. The neighborhoods in El Paso are mostly concentrated to the west and southeast of the post office and have many communities, golf courses and shopping areas. El Paso Independent School District (EPSID) is the largest school district in the region with more than 60,000 students in 92 campuses, including those on post itself.
There are 8 elementary schools, three middle schools, and 4 high schools located either on post or adjacent to the residential areas of Fort Bliss. A complete list of contact information can be found in this handy guide. The school locator is also available here.
There are ten other smaller school districts outside the post; El Paso, Socorro, Gadsden (NM), Isleta, Canutillo, San Elizario, Clint, Anthony, Fabens and Tarnillo. However, EPSID is the largest and has the largest number of military students.
In El Paso and Fort Bliss, summers are hot and dry in a typical desert field with high temperatures averaging 97-104 degrees Fahrenheit. Winters are short and cold with temperatures rarely falling below 24 degrees Fahrenheit and usually a minimum of around 34 degrees. Rainfall is scarce and usually falls between July and September. You can expect about 300 days of bright sunshine a year, so pack a sunscreen and buy a good pair of sunglasses.
