The SIG SAUER MCX-SPEAR is designed to provide infantry with a firearm capable of greater stopping power, greater range, and greater accuracy than the current M4 platform used by the US Army. The multi-caliber platform is interchangeable between the 277 SIG FURY, 6.5 Creedmoor and 7.62 NATO with a simple barrel change, thus increasing system adaptability. The evaluation went through all submissions, literally years of extensive technical testing, to determine which NGSW system is the best. Sig Sauer clearly offered the best version. As you can see, this rifle is a leap forward in combat rifle technology. Here is a quick overview of the gun.
The M4 carbine (M4a1 carbine) has been around for decades and deserves our respect. However, it is past time for an upgrade, as the carbine is outdated. Sig Sauer has provided significant enhancements to the MCX Spear (XM5 rifle in military parlance).
The real impetus for the development of this new weapon was the need to improve range and lethality against armored threats. The Next Generation Weapons Program Rifle, or XM5, is currently marketed commercially by Sig Sauer as the MCX Spear. They started selling their first products. Unless you get the automatic rifle version, it offers the same build as the military version. I know some of you are upset, but the select fire option requires a second mortgage on all .277 Sig FURY ammo.
The military accepts the 6.8x51mm cartridge, designated the Sig .277 Sig FURY. Because this round is similar in size to the 7.62x51mm (.308 case), it can easily fire .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor cartridges with a simple barrel change. I hope Sig releases a few versions of this gun in different calibers for those who don't want to buy a million barrels. Next, we will look at the characteristics of the guns.
The Sig Sauer MCX is a piston AR10 sized rifle. Thanks to the MCX-style system, the Spear doesn't rely on a traditional shock tube or spring system. This allows you to flex the buttocks. The size of a firearm depends almost entirely on the amount of ammunition it fires.
The ammunition is called 277 SIG FURY, or officially 6.8 × 51 mm. It is not the same as other 6.8mm rounds such as the 6.8 SPC. This new bullet has a hybrid metal body that develops very high pressure. We will talk about this a little later. More importantly, this gun needs to be bigger because it fires a cartridge of similar size to 7.62mm ammunition. Check out the MCX Spear specs below.

I can tell you that Sig has done a good job of making a very capable gun at a reasonable weight; However, in my opinion, this new platform has a very significant downside for the fighter. The wheel size and 20 wheel magazine capacity results in a dramatic increase in the weight being carried.
A standard combat kit for infantry is 6 × 30 rounds, or about 180 rounds. This combat load can be carried with three double magazine pouches or 5 single pouches with a rifle mag. It is very easy to insert into this plate holder.
Moving up to the larger 20 round mags is a lot more difficult to carry, especially considering you have to carry 9 magazines. 277 Sig FURY 9 magazine has a loaded weight of approximately 13.5 pounds. This compares to 6 PMAGS loaded in 5.56, which is 6.5 pounds for a combat load. Using the data from the light gear article, the increase in ammo weight and total soldier load can lead to a 4% increase in casualties.
